Very minor things
« on: February 04, 2010, 07:35:42 pm »
Given the experience on this forum this should be a softball right down the middle for anyone here, but just thought I'd seek some guidance before I start looking myself. This past storm I noticed that my four wheel drive console light doesn't come on as well as the horn doesn't blow anymore on my 97 TJ. The vehicle is engaging in 4W, just no light. I'm thinking these two things are probably a little more than a blown fuse but shouldn't be anything major. Also, the cigarette lighter doesn't work. I know that's just a fuse, but ever since my owners manual got stolen I don't have a fuse map anymore. I haven't started pulling fuses to see which one is blown but I guess that's what I might have to resort to.

And now for some general advice. I'm a construction guy, I know very little about engines. But the more I'm getting into my jeep the more I want to learn. I bought a Haynes repair manual this week but was wondering if there is some good literature out there written for the novice that wants to learn about jeeps, what makes them work, how to work on them, etc. Thanks in advance for any responses!

Check on the Jeep web site under OWNERS and you should be able to pull up an owners manual. Good luck! Note:there were a lot of changes from the early 97s to the latter 97s !

I personally prefer the CHILTONS repair manuals. I have one for my 91' Dodge Cummins and have made good use of it.
I don't think either edition prodives enough pictures, but I think CHILTONS does a better job explaining.

I never needed one for any of the CJ's I've owned over the years. The general things were easy, the technical stuff I simply asked more experienced people at the time.
Just do it...Re-do-It happened a lot too early on. Hell, it happens to me even now. Doh !

I also have "google" & "bing" which most times are even better.

I agree with Rick (did I really say that  ??? ) about CHILTONS repair manuals, Haynes are really vague sometimes.

Matt/Erica: How is that TJ book you have, is it any good, as far a building up a TJ goes?

Or, when in doubt, I just ask my dad.  When he doesn't know what he's doing, he fakes it pretty well.  8)

While your talking manuals . If you can find a factory manual at a reasonable cost get it . They're pack full of good info.
