I have been very happy with a synthetic road from winchlines.com   I wnet with their "fireline" which has a high heat tolerance.  Get a cover for your winch if you go synthetic though as UV light can damage the rope.

As for what I did to my jeep today? I went out to a paintball field owned by a friend of mine to do a "work day"  and got my Red scrambler stuck and broken in some of the nastiest mud I have seen,  it has the consistency of wet pottery clay and was bottomless,  Broken my clutch linkage and my winch failed due to a corroded connection,  did I mention that I had no tools with me.   Got it out and limped home.

Took it to Mt. Zion and got a few things checked out and tweaked.  Then, we stood around and talked a lot.   :)

Upgrade to synthetic line. You won't regret it.

well after the stress of life was just too much i decided to go wheelin , by myself. not a good idea. the winch worked great but the sheard off axle shaft up front put a stop to it, ive never broke off all 4 yoke ears at one time. but after all the carnage it puts everything back in perspective.   :D
build it, beat it, break it, fix it, repeat

It's not what I did today, but is what I've been trying to accomplish over the past two months. Frustration couldn't explain how I've felt...
I've been determined to get this CJ-5 out for another trail ride in about a two year period and had to encounter MANY CJ issues to keep things short.

Well, enough was enough so I made a phone call to my/our friend Mount Zion Off-Road.

I'll quote Mike's email when my CJ was finally ready after a 30 stay in their care...Take in mind I did tell Mike I wasn't in a hurry, I just wanted things corrected. It would “fire”, and I knew it wasn’t just a grounding issue.
That might have been the wrong thing to say :) for Mike and myself.

"We were pulling our hair out with your Jeep, but finally figured everything out"
I’m not a fan of tracing wires…Personally I’d rather eat dirt. Wow, did this CJ have issues. Here’s the list…
1)   Starter Solenoid (Sticking-Starter ON)
2)   Ignition Switch (Power wire from fuse box to relay had broken)
3)   20 amp fuse
4)   Ignition Module
5)   Distributor Replaced (Used)
6)   Distributor Pick-Up wire was bad
7)   Fuse for fuel pump relay was bad and replaced.

I’m picking it up Friday, am unavailable to go wheeling Saturday so I’m heading back down to the lower end of my property to exert some “testosterone” and just might have another interesting write up for the Club’s Newsletter.
I'll add this too...It pays to have a stored inventory of variuos parts...and Nancy calls it junk..."She has NO clue".
My reply: If I can't use it someone I come accross will be able to... :)
Mike Hardesty liked my last property story (few years back) so I just might enlighten his day again with another.  ;D

Why does something inane begin with "hold my beer" Anyway, I thought I would share stupid with the rest of you.

As for what is going on with my jeeps,  1982 is getting  converted to a hydraulic clutch linkage.  My 1981 is down at Adventurous 4wheel drive for 4.10 gears, once piece axle shafts and a lockright locker that I bought 17 years ago and never installed.  The plow lifting frame is installed and the bottom frame is close.

De-badged it and shortened the front bumper 18 inches.
