Technical Advice and Questions / Re: TJ Exhaust Manifold

I had mine welded for my 88 XJ when it cracked. Probably his best bet in this situation depending on where it's cracked.

Technical Advice and Questions / 95 XJ Radio
« on: October 18, 2010, 03:24:52 pm »
I'm trying to put a radio in my XJ and having some power issues.  The purple and white wire for ignition switch seems to not be suppling power to the radio when turned on.  I put the multi meter to it and it starts out at 11.72 volts and just drops to zero over the course of a minute or so.  When I first installed the thing everything was peachy but 5 minutes after installing it it shut off and wouldn't come back on.  After that I hooked the yellow and red wires both into the constant 12v and it worked but doesn't turn off with the ignition. Any ideas on this one?

When I go to pull out it makes a bit of a moan noise and then peels out. Almost like something is slipping for a brief second and then finally grabs. It does it no matter what gear I pull out in and makes the noise around turns when I'm not even touching the clutch. I was thinking of swapping the lunchbox locker out for spider gears, just to see if the little used locker has seen it's better days and needs retired.

Technical Advice and Questions / Spider gears and Locker
« on: July 09, 2010, 12:41:31 pm »
So I have a Detroit spider gear replacement locker in the rear Dana 44 of my XJ. I had thought I was having issues with my clutch because it seems to slip when pulling out. But I'm not sure what the problem is. I'm torn between rear diff or clutch. I'm going to try to bring it to the meeting tonight if anyone would like to try and help.

Monthly Meetings / Information / Re: Last meeting before show
« on: July 09, 2010, 09:42:28 am »
I know nobody likes a procrastinator but is it alright that I bring my registration for the show to the meeting tonight? I was kinda waiting til the last minute to get it in because I'm still not sure of my Jeep's road worthiness. But if I remember correctly the mail date had to be postmarked by today. So I hope this works cause I don't have any stamps and the mail will have run by the time I get home.

I've been using Rock Auto's website to buy all the replacement parts to put the ZJ back on the road. I have shopped around for better prices and I just don't see anyone cheaper than them on most things, even with shipping. They also ship thing super fast unless otherwise noted on the site for backorder stuff. They also have a section which lists a lot of manufacturer rebates which makes it even cheaper.

They sent me an email after my last order with a 5% off coupon code which they said can be distributed to friends and such and has unlimited useage.

5% Coupon code Expires July 11th:  32369512664817

General Discussion / Re: What did you do to your Jeep today?

I'm also going to paint the oil pan grabber green as well. I just have to wait for it to arrive. Out of the oil pans I have, one is crushed, one looks like a grenade went off inside it and has holes, and the one I bought was repaired and I didn't notice it until I cleaned it up. I don't feel comfortable putting an oil pan that's welded in many different places on. So I just said screw it and bought one from RockAuto.

I dropped my head off at Leedy's last night to get a valve job and valve seals done. I had the thing at Napa on Industrial Highway for over a month and they apparently forgot it was there or something. Leedy's is not only cheaper but he gave me his word it would be done by thursday or earlier.

Since I figured I had a week or so before I put the engine back together I decided to paint the valve cover, timing cover and intake manifold grabber green. Looks good, very bright!

I have a set of new 35 BFG MT KM1s with the nubs still on them. Be interested in using those until your KM2s come and then just keep the KM1s and give me the KM2s?  ???

I'm not going to be needing them until after June anyway.

Technical Advice and Questions / Re: 4.0 Rebuild

Anyone out there running the Performance Distributors Firepower ignition setup? I was looking into it but I don't know if it's worth the price of $175 vs the $70 for the Accel Super Tune-Up Kit on Quadratec that includes the plugs.

or

Any advice or recommendations would be helpful.

Technical Advice and Questions / 4.0 Rebuild
« on: April 20, 2010, 08:17:25 pm »
I got the 4.0 out of the 94 parts vehicle I had, finally.  Before I put it into the ZJ I was going to replace most of the seals, water pump, thermostat, and freeze out plugs. Just wondering if anyone recommends doing anything else while I'm at it? For example replacing the oil pump or having the head checked and valve seals replaced?  The motor is from a 94 that had about 90k on it when I bought it but it's been sitting in the Jeep since early 2007.

Also, I know that the 4.0 seems to run better on Champion copper plugs but what wires does everyone recommend? We use Autolite wires at work just because they have the factory style boots on them and snap on easier. I'm looking for best mpg and maybe some performance.

I unloaded the replacement engine for the ZJ. I'll start taking it apart and replacing seals soon.

Technical Advice and Questions / Re: Dana 44 Differential
« on: March 29, 2010, 11:29:22 am »
Just an update. I am almost positive it's just rust on my clutch. I had someone else pull out while I listened and it seems to be coming from that area. I pulled the rear cover off and everything seemed good. It's not an actual mechanical locker though, it's the lunch box spider gear replacement with the clutches in it. They stopped making them basically cause they break a lot apparently. I called the number for Eaton which owns Detroit now and got transfered a few times. The guy who I finally talked to was confused as to how I had one of these in a Jeep cause apparently they haven't made them for anything but ATVs for a while. I shoulda known that this thing was old when I bought it the instructions on installing it were on a VHS tape  :o
