Technical Advice and Questions / Smittybuilt Rear Bumper
« on: February 21, 2013, 03:56:43 am »
Has anyone run one of these smittybuilt rear bumpers with tire carrier? I am looking to get one and these are quite a bit cheaper than the rest so i would assume that means they are not as good. I do not have 600 to spend on a top of a line one so ia am considering risking it but would like to hear some opinions first.

I have a '88.  I put a Zone kit and shocks on it and have no issues about the ride comfort level.  Whatever parts that I didn't find in a catalog were ordered from a garage or a parts store with little difficulty.

Are you planning on doing hardcore wheeling with it, or just casual off-roading?

Most definitely casual offloading, trail riding. I am all for hardcore but don't have the time to commit to it. And I low quadratec's catalogue is thicker for the TJ but most of that stuff has less to do with offloading and more to do with accessorizing.

Technical Advice and Questions / Re: Local Machine Shops

I know it's on the other side of town but, Leedy Automotive is a good shop. I would highly recommend staying away from East York Napa. Not saying they do bad work but they spend most of the day smoking at the desk and building their own stuff. I had a head in there for a month once, before I said screw it and took it to Leedy. I dropped it off one evening and got a call the next day that it was done.

I think you are right about Napa. I had a friend recommend them but i emailed them several times about the project and they never responded

I have been thinking of unloading the TJ for a XJ. I need the room and it seems after market parts are cheaper and easier to find for the XJ. I however know nothing about the XJ. Any suggestions on year or model i should shoot for?

it would most likely be cheaper to modify the 4.0 to run on the existing vehicle setup. rather than convert the vehicle to match the 4.0. there is a website www.jeepstroker.com, it is all people who do engine swaps in their wranglers and Cherokees. they will be able to give you all the exact info. all you need to do is register (its free) and post your questions. they will most likely ask you for the casting numbers from the block and head and then can tell you the fastest cheapest way to make it work.

i am not in a position to help with the PCM but i was just thinking since you did all the head work that it might be worth checking the compression to make sure there are no issue there. good luck

just joined up. raised in central PA but have not done any offroading here. Got into Jeeps while living in Phoenix and recently moved back to PA. Looking forward to getting out on some trails. Just started building a 4.6 stroker for the TJ, although i suspect it will take some time before it is ready to drop in.
