Title: how much more lift
Post by: MUDDY on April 20, 2010, 11:28:06 pm
Thinking of going with 38's on the 88 XJ how much lift do you all think i should go with if i do it. I have 4.5 now I was thinking about using 8in lift. Fenders are cut already so that helps. so can i get some input on this. not sure what to use so I figured I would ask everyone first. muddy

Holy crap that is a lot of tire......

I would consider moving into a four link or a triangulated set-up.
That's going to make for a BIG truck to maneuver around the trails.

Do you still intend for that XJ to be a street-legal daily driver?  You'd probably need 8" anyway to be able to flex.  I don't know much about linkage, I'm just picturing a suicidal COG if you go too high.  Do your research...Jeepforum, NAXJA, etc.  Hope you find something that works!

I concur with Rick... (Did I really say that)

That's a lot of height  :o  of course you have to go a lot wider too, and on a trail, or obstacle, that's off camber it could get exciting. Below is a picture from Adam's Jeep Jam a couple of years ago. As you can see, there isn't much flex (still running Leafs in back and coils in front) and I think he's only running 35" or 36's. A lift isn't the only thing you'll be spending A LOT OF MONEY on. A Dana 44 isn't gonna hold up very well with 38's (Off Road) so you should start thinking about Dana 60's or equivalent, probably 5.13 or 5.38 R&P, at least 16" wheels or bigger so you can fit the larger Calibers and Rotors all around... the list goes on. If it's just a Mall Crawler then you could get away with not adding all the super strong stuff needed for the Trail.

Now I'm NOT trying to talk you out of it, it's just WOW.... that's gonna be a BFXJ.

mall crawler !!!!!!!!!!!  why would i make one of them. was thinking of converting the rear leaf to coil. and getting a set of scout rears and slapen them in it. but that is true wider is better. my fab guy at Crate Customs in Red Lion is going to love this project. i'm hoping i can start getting parts now. then start on it in the winter and have it done by spring.this will be one BigXJ as a DD. also was thinking of pulling the eng and trans and going with 350 V8w/ 400 trans. I should have enough power to make the tires bark then.

Yeah, you said it Jack.
And it's not the first time you have said it either.
I can dig up some archived "threads" to proove it.

It is what it IS !
