Title: ROAD TRIP!!!!
Post by: SteveTheFolkie on July 31, 2014, 05:09:18 pm
;D Ok - Abbottstown PA to Gouverneur NY then to the 1000 islands then to Rochester NY then back home - over 1300 miles @ 21.2 MPG in a 1997 ZJ 4.0 with a slushbox - along the way pulled a CRV out of the mud, enjoyed the really comfy leather seats, cruise control, fresh door seals (thanks to careless Kayak strapping) + the on-demand power of a 4.0 - great ride -
By the way - 390 through NY and the 4 lane sections of 15 reminded me of Austria and Germany - beautiful scenery, great pavement, very little traffic and few enough cops to run 85MPH much of the way!

Road trips - is there anything that better defines being American?

Cheers

Steve

Yes, that's beautiful country up there, although as a young truck driver, in the late 70's, drivng  up in Watertown and Messina, New York, in January and February, my travels weren't quite as pleasurable as yours.

This country has such a diverse topography that I'm not sure why anyone would spend the money to travel the World when you can experience just about every kind of climate (and visual enjoyment) right here in the continental US. You can experience sub-zero winners, rainforests, desert and Caribbean climates all without a Visa or Passport! I've been fortunate enough to have traveled in 90% of the Continental U.S., albeit, mostly through a windshield, but the last 20 years I have been lucky enough to have made some travels out west and had time to sight see and enjoy it.

Glad you had a nice trip.

As a world traveler, I can tell you that there are untold amounts of discoveries to be made in foreign lands.  The diverse cultures, sights, people, history, events...It's fun to see what else is out there; it's just not the same on TV as it is in real life.

The road trip to Key Largo was always my favorite...you know that you're finally getting somewhere when you hit SC and start seeing palm trees!

My first "serious" road trip was cross country with a damned good friend (who passed of brain cancer two years ago) - it was 1982 - I was interviewing for grad school @ Cal Tech, John was starting as an EE @ Techtronics in Oregon - 1970 BWM 2002 Tii - radar detectors, radar jammers (after all, John was an EE) - what a blast, especially watching the cowboy slip on the drinks I puked out while leaving a casino .....
