Technical Advice and Questions / Re: I need re-gearing advice!

With gearing,  there seems to be a bell curve on cost verse experience.  What I have found is shops that do gear swaps a lot tend to have the specialty tools and the experience to do a good job relatively quickly and painlessly.   A shop that does NOT do a lot of gear swaps may muddle through the job but it will take time and there for cost more as they may not have some of the specialty tools or experience and there for have to do a LOT of trial and error before the gears are set up properly.  More time equals more cost.  When looking at shops one of the first things I would do is ask how many ring and pinions swaps they do on a regular basis.

I finally swapped out the 2.73 R&P in my 1981 CJ8 for 4.11s  (and you thought your gearing was bad!)  It is a smidgen to low a gear for 31" tires if I were to run  highway speeds a lot,  just about right for 33" tires. My bill was $2200 but included installing a lock right locker (which I had) and one piece axle shafts in the rear.  This was expensive for my budget but I really wish I had done this SOOOoooo much sooner.

TO obtain access to the course you must register your jeep in the show.   Hope to see you there.

My old boyscout troop went down for a week,  after the fourth day we could not stand the bugs anymore and came home early..   The Green flys are horrible.  I do suggest some sand boards to help dig out.  If you tent camp,  instead of tent stakes bury 1 gal. milk jugs full of sand and tie off to the loops your tent stakes would normally go with those cheap $1 'binners.  It will keep your tent from blowing down the beach like a certain church group next to our camp site did.  (pretty amusing)

Went with Dad to a certain unspecified secret location (more on this later) to train as trail guides with RED scrambler that I have put some much time on fixing and promptly was attacked by rabid gremlins.   Problems included multiple hydraulic clutch linkage leaks,  (Following the law of: Anything hydraulic is a leak waiting for the most inconvenient place to happen.)  A loose brake line (which also leaked) and a transfer case that attempted to un-bolt itself from the transmission,  (boy that steep hill was fun after the transfer case popped into  neutral with leak brakes was isn't.  WEEEEEEE)  So I have some gremlins to slay, but if it is not solved now it will be soon.  The rockhard bolt in rollcage is a good expense even with the minor fit issues I have had with the hard top.  Overall I am pleased with the jeeps performance,  I just need to get that front ARB installed and a new transmission cross member on it.

The BLUE scrambler is also running now, although the alternator is about dead. Meh, next pay check.

The 1946 cj2a,  Distributor was declared kaput,  A new one was sourced at Vintage Jeep with a pertronix electronic kit.  I just have some fuel lines and installation to do then I can start this hanger queen.

Finally the 2005 LJ,  it is back from the dealership to the tune of $3200!  I bought most of my CJs for less than the cost of this repair!  This sucks.   For those that don't know I went  down to Vintage jeep in York a few weeks ago and the 6 speed transmission scattered for no apparent reason.  This required a new transmission.  mights as well put in  a clutch and change all the fluids (they needed it) and but a HVAC fan resistor in (when you loose speeds on your fan the resistor is bad and it tends to make your wiring go "melty and burny" when you let the magic smoke out).  Took the Jeep down to Susquehanna Jeep in Wrightsville since they sponsor the club (I got a discount on the repair incidentally). Early last week  I wrote a letter to Chrysler about my disappointment that jeep did not cover even part of this repair as the warranty had just expired and pointed out that there was NO real wear on my clutch, the jeep was not abused and the 6 speed NSG370 6 speed transmissions have multiple recalls and issues.  I got a response back that they WILL reimburse part of the cost involved in this repair in 6 to 8 weeks.

Now on to the unspecified secret Location:  This project is advancing although due to some issues it has been held up while some clarifications and solutions to some concerns are solved, however it is still on its time line.   The project is advancing and future staff is learning the property and its boundary and its safety concerns.  We are purposely keeping images, videos and descriptions vague for the time being.  This project has some detractors and they have tried causing lots of problems however, they have since failed and most of their claims have been proved false or faulty.  However we do not want to cause further problems.  Dad and I are running up pretty regularly for training.  All I can say is soon.

Yesterday,  I rode shotgun with Dad's 1974 CJ6 at a AAOA trail guide meeting.   John Meehan's CJ6 is a lot more capable now that he was used too.   ;D .  It did suffer some body damage,  first time that has happened in 39 years.
The project is moving forward, we can expect a lot more to happen in the coming months.  More on this later.

My 2005 Rubicon LJ's transmission went  'splody BOOM

It started simply enough,  I ran down to vintage jeep to drop off the distributor for my 1946 Jeep and a used pencil gear to correct the speedometer in my 1981.  On the way home I took I83 North to the PA turnpike,  no issues at all,  cruised the Turnpike to Carlisle,  and as I pulled away from the toll plaza I had no 4th gear!  Just noise.  I nursed it home and did some testing and fears are confirmed fourth gear is broken in my 6 speed.

Now the saga begins.  First call was down to Mt. Zion,  to see if they had a line on a used transmission or knew of issues with the nsg 370  (there are some)  Found out that this is a DEALER only repair.  I checked around at a really good transmission shop,  he does not even list that parts for that transmission in his books,  the NSG 370 is "engineered" to be difficult to fix with out specialist tools and stands.

I have been in contact with several dealerships,  I am not real impressed with Brenner,  Outten (were I bought it) is kind of far away. Freedom seems to be gouging there labor prices so any one have any input on Dealerships down York ways?  Right now I am leaning towards taking it to Susquehanna Dodge Chrysler Jeep   but I will have to rent a trailer to get it down there.  (I could drive it down skipping the bad gear but at risk of making my transmission UN-rebuildable)

Preliminary cost  are egregious,  a new transmission from Chrysler is running around $2050 + tax + fluids + clutch/pressure plate and throw out bearing,  then you add in the labor.  Incidentally  my jeep is 4000 miles past its power train warranty.  What confuses me is I was not even in 4ths when it failed.   Comments:

are you running a fuel pressure regulator,  it is mandatory or it will NEVER be right!  Adjust it to 2-3 .lbs of pressure.  Then as mentioned it is about one and half turns out.

I got pulled over by the PSP for having "two wide a fender flare on a STOCK LJ rubicon"  Apparently a STOCK rubicon LJ is illegal in PA by the trooper's reckoning,   I was not sighted for this however as I think it was a excuse to pull me over to check for DUI drivers late at night.
