General Discussion / Re: What did you do to your Jeep today?
« on: March 08, 2010, 09:22:46 pm »
I came home and was all excited to have recieved my 2" BB.  Once I got it open, I realized they forgot to ship half the stuff.  I then assembled the engine hoist with hopes of taking the motor out of the ZJ. I then realized that was a failure too because the chain to strap it to the motor was MIA. Only good news about my Jeeps today is that I found a set of reasonably priced 7" coils for the XJ. Hopefully my half of the $8,000 first time homebuyer tax credit is going to a long arm upgrade.

What kinda brake job did you do, I've bought whole Jeeps with brand new brakes for less than that!  ;D

Bought a Ford 8.8 w/ an adjustable trac bar already set up for the rear of the ZJ. Also got some tow hooks for the front and a t-case skid plate. Probably rip the 8.8 apart tomorrow and replace the seals and freshen it up before throwing it in.

Bought a set of Rubicon wheels for the ZJ from Baday2Day (Betty) and had to test fit them as soon as I got home. Still need about a 2" BB but they look good.

I started ripping apart the Grand Cherokee's engine bay getting it ready to yank the engine. Found little bits of the pistons rings just about everywhere.

Technical Advice and Questions / Re: OBD II Codes

If you're anywhere near Emig Mill Rd in Dover in your travels I have an OB2 reader. I can scan them for you sometime free of charge or as Joe said parts stores will do it free too.

The O2 sensor wires melting on the header usually blows a maxi fuse and the engine is dead until you replace it. I had that happen to me after installing the header and the wires were slightly misplaced.

As far as the code reading at Advance, I doubt they will have anything to hook up to pre OBDII that you can use. You have to do the On-Off-On-Off-On thing within five seconds to get the code I believe. Probably some info in the owners manual or google on what the codes mean and such. But if you've already started ripping and tearing you've probably cleared the codes already.

Hmm, that tidbit about cardboard sounds like what I did to try and get the Omix Ada diff cover I bought to fit (aside from it being my friend) ;D Horrible quality covers they are.

I don't know a whole lot about splines and such. I seem to remember that the newer 8.25s (late 90s early 00s) had the 29 spline and the earlier years had the 27, I'd say 27 for yours. But if it's an automatic trans it probably has 3.55 and if it's manual it's probably 3.07. But as with all things they might have been swapped but most likely it's one of those two.

I put the steering on, bled the brakes and moved it for the first time in almost 2 years. Let's just say she's got some bugs to be worked out.

Death Wobble you musta been doing something to yours today I assume? I saw you at Advance Auto along 30 this afternoon.

I bought a tie rod end for mine, and thought real hard about possibly putting it on. Don't think it will happen today.

Well thank you! I can't wait to drive it again, almost 2 years now. I should have just paid the money to have a shop install the gears. Or just did it myself.

Unless it was two years ago I doubt it. It's been parked in my parents back yard for about a year and a half. Been trying to get a few projects done between getting laid off and now working 6 days a week and trying to buy a house, it's been a long process.

I put the axle shafts back into the front and installed the tires. Realized I need to repair the threads on the tie rod ends to put them back on.

Technical Advice and Questions / Re: XJ to YJ engine and trans swap
« on: August 30, 2009, 10:17:25 pm »
I was told from anothers who have done it, it is cheaper and easier just to buy a YJ with the motor and trans already in it. Then swap your lift and such over from your 4 banger YJ. Heck it might even be cheaper to fix the XJ. You'd be surprised how rotted the underside can be before it's beyond repair. My passenger seat was practically held in by carpet and a prayer and I fixed mine for the most part. I pretty much had no choice on mine though, it was my second car and I had it just over a year before I looked under it (I was young and didn't know any better). But I still owed money on it and the people who sold it to me (Apple) wouldn't do anything so I was stuck.

On a side note, I probably wouldn't buy from them ever again. say this because what happened with my Jeep and I worked at one of their dealerships for 2 years. Some shady stuff passes through their shops.
