My 1996 ZJ with a 4.0 just let go with 290,600 original miles. What Jeep years and out of which models can I look to for used motors?

Not to steal your thread, but will the 4.0L V6 fit into my CJ7. Or is there to much cutting and welding needed?
-
the 4.0 is an i6 the 2.8 is a v6
-
Yes I was corrected once before for calling the 4.0L a V6, my bad its the I6 :p
-
yeah it was just too easy. arent the 4.0s alot narrower than a normal cj motor?
-
I thought I remember seeing some where on the internet, that someone did put a 4.0 into his CJ. But I can't remember.
-
Anything can be done...Modification being the correct language. With the correct motor mounts it can be mounted in a CJ

The straight six found in the CJ's is a 258 ci (4.2L) [Late 70's and 80's CJ's, older one's could have 232 ci, buick 225 v6, or 4cyl]. The 4.0L (242 ci) is the same block with shorter stroke on the crank. The hardest part of switching from a 258 to a 4.0L would be transfering the computer.
