Title: Rear Bumper w/Tire Carrier
Post by: Charlie on November 10, 2009, 08:01:02 pm
Ok...... What is the best rear bumper with tire carrier?

Solid construction no squeaks or rattles...Is there such a thing?

Lets have some suggestions and opinions folks.

Charlie,

I've been very happy with my Body Armor setup.  Can't really say that it is totally quiet, but I've got a Hi-lift jack on it and I can carry 2 metal Gerry cans on it as well.  They say it accommodates up to 37" tires I think - I know at least 35".

I did not have mine set up correctly initially and it popped open a few times on the trail.  Now that I have it adjusted correctly, it's been fine (it was entirely my fault on the adjustments).

Although the documentation does not say the 2" receiver is tow rated, I am sure it will handle 2,000 lbs which is all my TJ is rated for.  I've had no problems towing with it - the bumper is tied to the frame with tie-plates in addition to bolting to the stock bumper locations.  Since I have a Rokmen Gas Tank Skid, it sits right up against the back of the 2" receiver and I've had to trim about 1/4" off of some hitch bars that I have.  Others did not need that.  The stock skid or others may have enough gap that you wouldn't have to do that.  Again, any downgrade in tow rating of the hitches still exceeds what I can tow with the TJ.  A Dremel and a few cutoff wheels makes quick work of the trimming.

I needed to get a hitch extension for my Hitch-Haul carrier as I have the tire mount extended to accommodate the jack and gas cans.  It makes it easier to tow the trailer as well.  It also has a CB antenna mount, but I don't use that.  If you want to retain the stock 3rd Brake light, you'll also need to get the extension that Body Armor makes to raise the brake light up above the tire carrier.  It's not really expensive and does the trick.

All in all, a nice heavy duty bumper/tire carrier.  You can purchase just the bumper and get the tire carrier later like I did.  If you do that, make sure the bumper is the one with the tire carrier mount as they make an almost identical bumper without the tire carrier mount.

I forgot to add that the bumper has D-ring mounts AND comes with 2 D-rings!

I have a Garvin Wilderness ATS that is rated for up to a 38'' tire Quadratec part #12043.321.  I haven't heard a noise since I installed it three years ago with 35's.  I also used Rokmen extreme duty frame tie in's.  The frame tie in's lets the frame support a lot of the weight of the tire, bumper and the recovery points rather then just the rear crossmember.

They all carry a price Charlie...
But the two that come to mind with me are as follows...

1) WARN, just visit their site and see what it offers.
2) Cassidy's Custom Creations - Jeremy Cassidy has great products created by himself in Forrest Hills, MD..."Google" IT and make a personal call. He WILL create what YOU want specifically.

Charlie,

I forgot that I have a pair of the Rokmen frame tie-ins somewhere in the garage if you're needing a set.  (Or anyone else that might be in need of them).  I got them before I decided on the Body Armor bumper that came with their own tie-ins.  Very reasonable price or I'll trade you the tie-ins for 5 35" tires that I've heard you've got sitting around. ;D

It would just take me a while to dig them out as I'm spending lots of weekends in the woods this time of year.

Thanks Guys.

I will consider all of your recomendations.

I will have to do something before too long, that spare 35 is gonna rip my rear door off! :-\

This could be an idea for Santa. ;D

Charlie, I've been running a Warn rear bumper and tire carrier for some time. It has held very well with very heavy Krawlers on it. the only thing I don't like is that you can't fit any hitch inserts in it because they don't recomend towing but I have modified a few inserts and have pulled my M416 trailer a few times.

I have terafles on my 07 and absolutely love it. I believe it carrys up to 38inch.  If i had not gotten a crazy cheap deal on buying my bumper used i would have bought a river raider rear bumper. the guy is local, i think right around York and I have been wheeling with him a few times. Great guy and every thing that leaves his shop is a piece of art. You might remember his red 2dr the york jeep show.. IT IS AWESOME!!

Ron,
I need to think on that for a bit.

I dumped a pretty penny on the Garvin rear bumper this week.

Again, thanks everyone for your input.

I installed the Garvin rear bumper with tire carrier on Sunday....I love it!

Scott G., thanks for the convincing post, this bumper/carrier set up is exactly what I was looking for.

BTW, what's the law concerning the third brake light? Does that thing really need to be on?

Update: Third brake light installed!
