Title: a little something for Veterans Day ...
Post by: (Tattoo) Jack on November 05, 2013, 09:04:36 am
" A veteran is someone who, at one point in his/her life, wrote a blank check made payable to "The United States of America," for an amount of "up to and including my life"
A POEM WORTH READING
He was getting old and paunchy And his hair was falling fast, And he sat around the Legion, Telling stories of the past.
Of a war that he once fought in And the deeds that he had done, In his exploits with his buddies; They were heroes, every one.
And 'tho sometimes to his neighbors His tales became a joke, All his buddies listened quietly For they knew where of he spoke.
But we'll hear his tales no longer, For ol' Joe has passed away, And the world's a little poorer For a Veteran died today.
He won't be mourned by many, Just his children and his wife. For he lived an ordinary, Very quiet sort of life.
He held a job and raised a family, Going quietly on his way; And the world won't note his passing, 'Tho a Veteran died today.
When politicians leave this earth, Their bodies lie in state, While thousands note their passing, And proclaim that they were great.
Papers tell of their life stories From the time that they were young, But the passing of a Veteran Goes unnoticed, and unsung.
Is the greatest contribution To the welfare of our land, Some jerk who breaks his promise And cons his fellow man?
Or the ordinary fellow Who in times of war and strife, Goes off to serve his country And offers up his life?
The politician's stipend And the style in which he lives, Are often disproportionate, To the service that he gives.
While the ordinary Veteran, Who offered up his all, Is paid off with a medal And perhaps a pension, small.
It is not the politicians With their compromise and ploys, Who won for us the freedom That our country now enjoys.
Should you find yourself in danger, With your enemies at hand, Would you really want some cop-out, With his ever-waffling stand?
Or would you want a Veteran His home, his country, his kin, Just a common Veteran, Who would fight until the end.
He was just a common Veteran, And his ranks are growing thin, But his presence should remind us We may need his likes again.
For when countries are in conflict, We find the Veteran's part, Is to clean up all the troubles That the politicians start.
If we cannot do him honor While he's here to hear the praise, Then at least let's give him homage At the ending of his days.
Perhaps just a simple headline In the paper that might say: "OUR COUNTRY IS IN MOURNING, A VETERAN DIED TODAY."
AMEN ...

That was nice. I would have liked to have had that poem to read at my uncle's funeral last month.

What a wonderful poem, thank you for posting it. Below is a Youtube link to a short movie made a few years ago, maybe you have seen it. I watch this a few times a year. I laugh and I cry every time. God bless our active and former Military Personnel.

Jack, Thank You; but no I am not a Vet. Within my and my wife's family we have had many that are serving and have served. Veteran's Day has always been an important date for our family. I do know that many in the Club are Veterans and am thankful for all they have done.

Bill: yes, there are a lot of Active/Former Military in Pa Jeeps. The Duty assignments, and Missions, they performed, were as unique and as diverse as the Jeeps they drive. But the coolest thing I found in this club is the Patriotism exhibited by the people who didn't serve, that's truly special.

Thank You All who have served.
They Did Their Share By Joanna Fuchs -
On Veteran’s Day we honor Soldiers who protect our nation. For their service as our warriors, They deserve our admiration.
Some of them were drafted; Some were volunteers; For some it was just yesterday; For some it’s been many years;
In the jungle or the desert, On land or on the sea, They did whatever was assigned To produce a victory.
Some came back; some didn’t. They defended us everywhere. Some saw combat; some rode a desk; All of them did their share.
No matter what the duty, For low pay and little glory, These soldiers gave up normal lives, For duties mundane and gory.
Let every veteran be honored; Don’t let politics get in the way. Without them, freedom would have died; What they did, we can’t repay.
We owe so much to them, Who kept us safe from terror, So when we see a uniform, Let’s say "thank you" to every wearer.

Nice one Bill. Thanks for posting ... AND Thanks! to all my Brothers n Sisters who are now, or have, served. Every time I see a man or woman in uniform I go out of my way to go over and shake their hand and say thank you, even if I'm in a vehicle I blow the horn, wave, and give'em the thumbs up. Because NOBODY, who serves in the military, deserves to be treated the way we were ...
Vietnam, 1971-72 1st Aviation Brigade 173rd Assault Helicopter Company Door Gunner/Crew Chief on a UH-1H
I had the honor, and privilege, of being an "Air Asset" for MAC-V-SOG (CCN), arguably some of the Bravest, and toughest, Warriors to have ever stalked that jungle! They truly were the "Tip of the Spear".
