Post by: hillbilly on October 07, 2008, 03:41:52 pm
okay this is an arguable question and i realize that but here it is...  what is the suggested rim size for 33x15x12.5  mud tires  wrangler mt to be exact,   every one i ask has a different suggestion,   the vehicle is wheeled and hard sometimes ,i run 15 x 10 on my street 33's  but ive been told to run 15x8 for more grip

I have always run 15x8 wheels with 33-12.50s and have never had any problems. I feel I get a little more side wall bulge that helps protect the wheel.

I trying to figure out what a "Street" 33 is  ???

Anyhow...  Goodyear suggests an "approved rim width" of 8.5-11 inches for the 33x12.50R15 MTR tire. If you go wide you'll end up scraping the outer rim lip on the rocks, if you go too narrow you'll have the thread face bowed outward when they're aired up. Usually, people tend to run the middle range. JMO, but I don't see any problem with 10" rims. I can't give ya my experience with 33x12.50 MTZ's 'cause I just recently installed them on 8" rims, but haven't got 'em off road yet. My tires "look" like they're running fairly flat, but I can see that the shoulders are not touching much (by the lack of road dust on them).

 Hope this helps.

I run 15x8 for my 35x12.5, and even ran them for my 33x12.5.

The 8"W will help you keep a bead better than a 10"W.  Go with the 8.

8in. all the way.
I think sidewall cuts happen more when to a 33 x 12.5 tire is on a 10" rim, then when mounted on a 8" rim.

I'd run 8" up to 12.50.....Beyond that go with a 10" rim.
As you stated you'll hear many different opinions.
The make of tire has a lot to do with it as well. I did run a 10" rim with BFG Muds 35"x12.50"x15" and broke the bead too often.
I went back to the 8" rim and haven't had to deal with it near as often.
Interco's seem to hold better on wider rims, I did run IROC'S on 10's without issues.

BTW- You can get a decent price on "steelies" at Hoak's 4x4 in Wrightsville.....Got several sets there myself over the years.

Speaking of "steelies", some brands have a thicker, rounded Lip. I would assume that could help reduce the chance of bending [the lip] and cutting the tire.
