Title: Winch problems
Post by: Smac on November 03, 2010, 12:30:22 pm
I was wondering if anyone around the Red Lion/Dallastown/Windsor area was available to take a look at a winch set-up. I purchase a used winch from a guy on here/craigslist and it doesn't work. Unfortunately he is not willing to return my money so I am hoping someone can tell me whats wrong to fix it. I have spent too much money modifying the bumper (parts and tools) to afford taking it somewhere.

Really want to have it done before Patton, PA on the 28th.

After all the troubleshooting it is clear that I have bad solenoid(s). I think this guy knew they were bad when he sold it to me since he accused me of hooking it up wrong and blowing them. So I got the schematics, reversing the connections wouldn't do that anyway. So I got to thinking why on earth would he care about tossing a $20 part at it. Until I tried to buy one, they are discontinued.

Long story short.... I am screwed out of 400 bucks and still need a winch if I am unable to find the solenoids Warn P/N 2040, if anyone has any I am looking for them.

Yes Hoak's holds the NE Regional Service Contract for all WARN Winch's but his problem is electrical and will cost...All mechanical failure is covered through WARN, not electrical.

However, Eric just may have some of those parts you're looking for...even discontinued ones.
Eric's good, he can easily do 10-12 winch services a day when he's up to it.

Thanks, I will keep that in mind. I may have a simple connection issue. I am not certain that the controller connector is making good contact with the female side. The 12v line is corroded pretty bad. I ran continuity tests and the connection was intermittent at best.

Sounds to me that you got taken....it's too bad....I'm sure it was bad when you got it....I got my Warn via eBay worked like a charm for a few years then the moter went bad on me....that cost me like $300 to get fixed....I hope it's nothing expensive for you.

People are saying the solenoid is interchangeable, as long as you find one that is hooked up the same way as  yours, it will work.

yea i read that same thread... only problem is finding a solenoid that is the same configuration and is continuous duty... all solenoids are not created equally contrary to a lot of what you will read. the simple way to explain it is that when our winch solenoids are used they are turned on and stay on, also they must be able to handle the current load, but most solenoids turn on only for a moment until the required current is applied to whatever its turning on (in most cases the starter). There is a new solenoid pack on ebay right now I hope to win for 150 bucks, wish me luck.
