Its alive again.  My 1981 CJ8 is back after a extended stay at F&S Racing and Adventurous 4x4.  I am pretty pleased.  it now has 4.10 gears one piece axle shafts and a rear lock right locker.  Next on the agenda correcting the speedometer,  maybe finding a couple of more 33x9.5R15 tires and fabricating a lower snow plow mount and maybe installing my full roll cage.

These are images taken of my current Red (1982) Cj8 project.  The clutch linkage failed on me (again)  a little while ago.  I have been working on converting it to hydraulic with a external slave cylinder.  Some of these show the heat shield that I fabricated out of 1/16" stainless steel.  to protect the external slave cylinder from header heat.    I still need to get the hanging pedal out to drill a mounting hole for the master cylinder and according to the direction have a strengthening weld added.

Thankfully, we are in a rare opportunity to construct  and improve a new trail system for not just us but a large cross section of users.  The purpose of this thread is informational,  If you have something to add please feel free to.    What I envision is a repository of reference books, links, post and images that will help us build proper trails at AAOA.     I have some experience in doing this from Appalachian Trail work I did as  a Eagle scout service project.  The biggest references I used were books "Lightly on the Land"    and the Boyscout Field Manual which has chapters on constructing footpaths,  while this may not seem like it applies to jeep trails, It does, and taking steps to control soil erosion during trail cutting makes for a long lasting trails that remain open.  How many awesome trails are closed now due to erosion  at Telco?  One of the simplest methods in constructing water bars,  these have a dual purpose of retaining soil on the trail bed and diverting water flow to the side of the trail and dispersing it to the side.    Below is just the first couple of links that came up in my search.  Start looking things over and look for information we can adapt to these projects at AAOA.

Keith and hillbilly met up with as planned at Basspro,  we were on the road on time and arrived at the staging area as planned,  we cut one trail (when I left at 14:00) That was supposed to be "easy"   Its Not but it is easier than what the "hard" trail crew is doing.  This is very reminiscent of early Paragon trail clearing and there is a LOT of work yet to do.  I suggest future crews take a change of socks,  water proof boots,  saws and lopers,  In addition digging bars, and picks would have been useful today.  Thanks to all that showed up.

I dropped off my blue 181 CJ8 two months ago to have 4.10 gears, Yukon one piece axle shafts (AMC20) and install a lockright locker I bought new 17 years ago.  Since then this has gotten more expensive and had some setbacks and delays.  Today I went down paid basically the entirety of my wages these last two months and drove home 56.2 miles when...........it promptly broke,  the axle shaft parting company with the jeep while in motion.  The Shop in quest came promptly with a trailer and collected it,  Right now I am pretty confident that they are going to take care of the issues.  At least it did not happen until I was getting off the interstate instead of at speed.

I am also half way done installing a hydraulic clutch linkage in my 1982 CJ8.

Mine is a upright 30 Gallon Cambell Hausfeld that I got at home Depot 6-7 years ago.  It is loud and it has a draw that will once in a while throw a light duty circuit breaker (120amp)  BUT the only issue I have has is the brass supply line from the compressor to the holding tank wore through.  CH had a repair kit out to me with everything needed to service and repair my compressor for a reasonable cost with in a weeks time.  That is a big plus,  being able to fix it if you have too.  Get the biggest shop compressor you can, once you start with air tools you will never look back.  I blew the seals out of most of my CH air tools and started with IR as replacements.   Definately get a oil/ moisture trap this is REALLY important if you are going to paint.

Why does something inane begin with "hold my beer" Anyway, I thought I would share stupid with the rest of you.

As for what is going on with my jeeps,  1982 is getting  converted to a hydraulic clutch linkage.  My 1981 is down at Adventurous 4wheel drive for 4.10 gears, once piece axle shafts and a lockright locker that I bought 17 years ago and never installed.  The plow lifting frame is installed and the bottom frame is close.

The Military vehicle Assoc. attended in force at Bantam. There" area" was set up like a camp.  Kind of like we did last year but on a grander scale.

The on site trail rides were a big hit at Bantam but not logistically possible at the fair grounds,  I heard LOTS of bitching about the off site trail rides at Bantam.  It was a long drive to a park were the "trails" were graded stone two way fire roads in a state park, Participants were NOT happy.  The closest thing to the fair grounds would be Micheux, it would take a hour to get there and a hour to get back, the Roads that are open are NOT challenging enough for the effort involved in what would become a 4-6 hour long junket.

Maybe some Radio advertising this year?  I still meet people that do NOT know about the show and those are the people we need to reach.

I have been very happy with a synthetic road from winchlines.com   I wnet with their "fireline" which has a high heat tolerance.  Get a cover for your winch if you go synthetic though as UV light can damage the rope.

As for what I did to my jeep today? I went out to a paintball field owned by a friend of mine to do a "work day"  and got my Red scrambler stuck and broken in some of the nastiest mud I have seen,  it has the consistency of wet pottery clay and was bottomless,  Broken my clutch linkage and my winch failed due to a corroded connection,  did I mention that I had no tools with me.   Got it out and limped home.
