Technical Advice and Questions / 4.2 (1989) valve cover
« on: April 30, 2012, 11:48:02 am »
My plastic valve cover seems to be warped.  leaks badly on the carb side. (the side that has no bolts)
I replaced the cork gasket used sealent, etc.  But it still leaks enough that I want to fix it ASAP.

As a demonstration.  when the cover is installed an torqued down properly the gasket in the leaking area can slide in and out freely from under the cover, so it is not touching at all.

I would prefer to replace it with a metal cover if I can.  but they all I can find for sale seem to say they are for 4.2s only up to 1986.  Mine is an 89.

I see the older ones look like they bold down around the outside (which seems the most logical).  Not just the 2 bolts on top, and one on each end.

My question is....  Can I use one of  the older metal ones?  I can drill and tap holes if I need to.  I just want to be sure it will clear all the rockers and fit snug on the head?   I assume it would make the most sense to drill the cover to accept the existing mounting studs instead of having to drill and tap holes in the head.

Or are there any metal covers already compatible with my 1989?

I can't be the only one..

Technical Advice and Questions / Re: TJ Exhaust Manifold
« on: October 26, 2010, 09:07:00 am »
what about an older version 4 cyl from a yj or xj?

I wish I knew.  I cant seem to find any information about fitment from any other years.  It seems that the 2.4l was picked up and dropped so quickly, it's almost like it never existed.

Technical Advice and Questions / TJ Exhaust Manifold
« on: October 25, 2010, 03:20:37 pm »
A friend of mine just found that he has a cracked exhaust manifold on his 2003 wrangler X (it has a 2.4L that they apparently only used for that one year)

He has called every supplier we can think of but they all say the manifolds are in indefinite back order.  So no one has one, and they don’t know when they can get one.

Does anyone know if there is any aftermarket header that would work as a replacement?

Don't waste your time with an old school Willys type steering box and column. You won't be happy and your vehicle will be too heavy for it anyhow. Those old worm gear and sector shaft units are right loose anyway...

Thanks for the advice.  I may have been unclear though.  I'm not really replacing the actual steering gear with old willy stuff.

I already have a new YJ steering box and a new lower shaft (the part under the hood) ready to go in, so i'm not going back to actual old school.  I am only trying to get rid of the column selector because the linkages are all rusted under the hood and there is a lot of slop in the shifter it self.  It doesnt really snap in to place any more. I fear it is going to give way any day.  I already have all of my other controls on the dash, so it would not be beneficial to me to replace the column with another OEM one with the control sticks on it.   If I can move the selector to the floor I can just take off the shift lever and the linkages and keep the steering wheel and column as is.  Or replace with a more bare bones interior column to make it look cleaner.   the colum replacement is secondary.  First I would like to move the selector to the floor.

is that the same trans as the 89 YJ by any chance?  i.e. could it bolt up dirrectly with nly minor adjustments.

By console do you mean on the floor?

i'm not worried about coming up with a column if i can get rid of the gear shift.  Without the shifting linkages to wory about I can pretty much put anything in place.

Actually, help with other option for an auto 1989 YJ with 4.0.

The steering column and box i have are junk they are super sloppy.  I can turn the wheel back and forth between about 10:00 - 2:00 and not effect the front wheels.  It is all rusty anyway and needs to be changed.  Additionally the drive selector on the column is in bad condition.

I no longer have any controls on the column, not even the ignition switch.  Seriously the column right now only contains the sterring wheel and gear selector.  my wiring harness totally burned out so took it out and custom made EVERYTHING.  the turn signal switch is self containd one stolen from a 1960s Mack truck and it just clamps to the column, I also have a push button start on the dash and kill switch, so i don't even have the keys any more (the steering wheel lock broke long ago)

So i was wondering if I can nix the whole thing and get a plain straight column with just a steering wheel on it like a really old jeep, or tractor for that matter :)

and somehow move the gear selector to the floor to eliminate all those rusty linkages under the hood.   maybe a shift kit or something from a donor vehicle like a cherokee.  did any have one on the floor?

Looking for suggestions.  thanks

Technical Advice and Questions / Re: Carburetor Choice

Like i said if you have patience and know how to tune a carb you will really enjoy the MC2100.   And by knowing how to tune a carb i mean the whole engine and carb. it is all one system, you cant expect to change one part and do nothing to the rest and still get it right.  you will have to adjust your timing a tiny bit to accomodate the change.  but you should do that with the webber too. if youre not, you are getting no real advantage..  timing is dictated by mixutre among other things.

I did a HEI distributor upgrade at the same time and that is a great way to go.  that upgrade is super easy and fairly cheap.  The process of doing both eliminate the computer and ignition module all together, so no need to nutter at that point.  it is already done.  Becaue of that i now have two vac lines and two wires under the hood.  everything else is removed.  it is a thing of beauty.

Technical Advice and Questions / Grand Cher. T-Case question
« on: August 14, 2008, 11:32:32 am »
My friend has a 98 or so grand with the v8. (maybe a 283? or something like that)  It has all time all-wheel-drive.  - sorry i don't have much more detail.  it's not mine so i don't know it inside and out yet.

Anyway, he has a leaking rear main seal.  So we have to drop some components to get in there to fix it.  We were thinking it might be a good time to do a part time 4x4 conversion.

We don't know what transfer cases are compatable and what donor vehicles to look for yet.

He wants it to be pretty much plug and play.  He is actually truck mechanic so he can fab up mounts or whatever.

Or if someone can even point me to a web resource with this swap detailed i would be grateful.

Thanks

I am running the MC2100 set up.  Running is relative though.  Yes it run's GREAT!  THe engine is done, but I am doing a near full rebuild of an 89 project i got about a year ago.

That carb is good. I know a guy with the webber and it also works very well.  Cant go wrong with either.  Don't listen to all the internet horror stories about either one being crap.  they are just people who don't have the patience to adjust a carb properly to begin with.  Even the stock carb is workable with the nutter.  But bigger is better in this case so an upgrade is nice.

If $ is no object EFI is a more reliable choice I guess.  but i don't know if its worth the extra ching IMHO unless you are doing serious wheeling with extreme angles...

What if your vehicle was registered in a county without emissions and then the county goes to emissions testing.  I think it should be "grandfathered" to not need the testing.  When a county switches it could end up with a large population all of the sudden needing costly repairs or even new vehicles within one year.  that doesnt seem fair.

Hell - if all you're dealing with is visual super-glue a bogus vacuum line onto the carb bowl and splice it into somewhere useless -  ;D like a fitting on your air cleaner housing  ;)

 ;D  I like it.

Thanks!   Hopefully i wont need it done.  But If i do... I'll give you a shout.

I'm also keeping the carter is backup, if i need to, I can throw that back on temporarily.  I have to put on my buddy's narrower tires to pass safety inspection because I dont have wider flares yet.  .

where are you located i have an emission tester and would not see that if you would want to get that done if so u could call me at 7176591008

Spruce Creek (just outside State College)
I may or may not need to take you up on, at least the visual inspection part, not the sniffer.  Also, the wife and i plan on relocating some time fairly soon.  So unless i want to sell the jeep in a package deal with our house, I will need to get it compliant.
