Technical Advice and Questions / 4.2 (1989) valve cover
« on: April 30, 2012, 11:48:02 am »
My plastic valve cover seems to be warped.  leaks badly on the carb side. (the side that has no bolts)
I replaced the cork gasket used sealent, etc.  But it still leaks enough that I want to fix it ASAP.

As a demonstration.  when the cover is installed an torqued down properly the gasket in the leaking area can slide in and out freely from under the cover, so it is not touching at all.

I would prefer to replace it with a metal cover if I can.  but they all I can find for sale seem to say they are for 4.2s only up to 1986.  Mine is an 89.

I see the older ones look like they bold down around the outside (which seems the most logical).  Not just the 2 bolts on top, and one on each end.

My question is....  Can I use one of  the older metal ones?  I can drill and tap holes if I need to.  I just want to be sure it will clear all the rockers and fit snug on the head?   I assume it would make the most sense to drill the cover to accept the existing mounting studs instead of having to drill and tap holes in the head.

Or are there any metal covers already compatible with my 1989?

I can't be the only one..

Technical Advice and Questions / TJ Exhaust Manifold
« on: October 25, 2010, 03:20:37 pm »
A friend of mine just found that he has a cracked exhaust manifold on his 2003 wrangler X (it has a 2.4L that they apparently only used for that one year)

He has called every supplier we can think of but they all say the manifolds are in indefinite back order.  So no one has one, and they don’t know when they can get one.

Does anyone know if there is any aftermarket header that would work as a replacement?

Actually, help with other option for an auto 1989 YJ with 4.0.

The steering column and box i have are junk they are super sloppy.  I can turn the wheel back and forth between about 10:00 - 2:00 and not effect the front wheels.  It is all rusty anyway and needs to be changed.  Additionally the drive selector on the column is in bad condition.

I no longer have any controls on the column, not even the ignition switch.  Seriously the column right now only contains the sterring wheel and gear selector.  my wiring harness totally burned out so took it out and custom made EVERYTHING.  the turn signal switch is self containd one stolen from a 1960s Mack truck and it just clamps to the column, I also have a push button start on the dash and kill switch, so i don't even have the keys any more (the steering wheel lock broke long ago)

So i was wondering if I can nix the whole thing and get a plain straight column with just a steering wheel on it like a really old jeep, or tractor for that matter :)

and somehow move the gear selector to the floor to eliminate all those rusty linkages under the hood.   maybe a shift kit or something from a donor vehicle like a cherokee.  did any have one on the floor?

Looking for suggestions.  thanks

Technical Advice and Questions / Grand Cher. T-Case question
« on: August 14, 2008, 11:32:32 am »
My friend has a 98 or so grand with the v8. (maybe a 283? or something like that)  It has all time all-wheel-drive.  - sorry i don't have much more detail.  it's not mine so i don't know it inside and out yet.

Anyway, he has a leaking rear main seal.  So we have to drop some components to get in there to fix it.  We were thinking it might be a good time to do a part time 4x4 conversion.

We don't know what transfer cases are compatable and what donor vehicles to look for yet.

He wants it to be pretty much plug and play.  He is actually truck mechanic so he can fab up mounts or whatever.

Or if someone can even point me to a web resource with this swap detailed i would be grateful.

Thanks

Technical Advice and Questions / Rewiring - dumb idea?
« on: April 08, 2008, 10:13:20 am »
This weekend I am doing the MC2100 swap and HEI distributor swap at the same time.

My hope is to eliminate the ignition wiring problems I am having right now.  Bad computer or bad module, or both.  Don’t care since they are both being bypassed.

I am also having dash wiring problems.  The PO partially installed a used harness.  It is having all sorts of problems.  I don’t care much about most of them.  I just need to get my turn signals, wipers, and horn to work to pass inspection.  I’ll worry about the gauges later….. what radio?

Once the module and computer are eliminated, isn’t a good portion of the under hood, and under dash harnesses not needed?   Would it be a dumb idea to try to just disconnect the dash harness and run new wires directly to the fuse block to control the signals, wipers, horn etc… rather then try to diagnose the problem existing within the harness?

The dash problem is essentially that nothing works right except the head lights & marker lights.  Turn signals don’t work, horn doesn’t work, and the dash lights want to be on all the time like they are connected to a hot lead right from the battery.  BTW  should they be switched by the headlight switch or the ignition?

Any opinions on keeping and trying to fix the harness Vs. rewiring the needed circuits as stand alone?

Technical Advice and Questions / Slip yoke leaking
« on: March 12, 2008, 09:26:18 am »
I have fluid dripping from the back of the slip yoke, where the rear drive shaft enters.  Is there a simple seal change, or is this somthing worse.  There is also a little side to side play in the shaft at this point.  is that normal.

This jeep still is not "driveable" but i have gotten the engine running.  So im going over the rest to get it road/trail worthy and pass inspection.  I bought it as a project unter construction so there has been a suprise around every corner.

It has a 1"shackel lift on it now.  Im planning on going spring lift eventually.   probably 4".
Im wondering if i should just get the slip yoke eliminator kit now... Will i have a problem with driveshaft length while i run it with the current suspension, then go up to 4"?  I dont want to do SYE now if i will need to buy two drive shafts.  I wasnt planning on lifting it yet because im dumping $ into parts to get it going.

Technical Advice and Questions / Trouble shooting

Ignition system:

Background:  Installing a rebuilt 4.2L in 1989 wrangler.  (I bought a project in process and i'm finishing the install)

Problem: Turns over but wont start using its own ignition system.  (Starts and idles fine using a rescue box bypassing the coil)

while sitting with the battery hooked up the coil has constant power (not sure if is is supposed to or not) it also gets very hot to the touch.

Where is the ignition module and what does it look like? maybe its a problem with that.   I think i have all the required wires and hoses hooked up.  i still have some things to attach but i think they are all secondary systems that shouldnt have anything to do with starting. ???

Jeep came with a spare ignition switch (plastic box that attaches to the column).  Could the problem be in that switch, maybe the PO was planning on changing it.

Thanks for your ideas in advance!

Technical Advice and Questions / Dumb question

I heard back from the PO related to my electrical problems.
(see my other thread http://www.pajeeps.org/forum/index.php?topic=1515.0

He said he had the harness replaced with a used factory harness out of a 1990.  Mine is an 89 so i assume there shouldnt be anny issues since the 4.0 wasnt introduced until 91.  right?

he also said he is "fuzzy" on wheather they re hooked up the column since he had that out again after.  so that could be one of my problems right there.

cant wait to get back to the garage to work on it some more.  probably wont be for another couple weeks though.  :'(

Technical Advice and Questions / Carb & Vacuume questions
« on: January 07, 2008, 03:38:20 pm »
Im currently reinstalling a rebuilt 4.2 in my 89 YJ.  everything is in except the radiator, power steering and all the vacuum lines.

I want to do the nutter before i even start this back up.  Havnt gotten an MC2100 yet but im in the works.

I found (what i think are) good nutter instructions, but not much on what vacuume hoses i can leave out.  Can anyone tell me what i need to keep and what i can plug.  I think this will greatly simplify the rest of my install, and help tuning.  No i dont have emissions inspection to deal with.

Im going to be keeping the carter for now, but i plan to upgrade to the 2100, or weber in the near future.

p.s. I have an older holley double pumper available to me.  would it be foolish to try to put that on?

Technical Advice and Questions / CB Help
« on: December 21, 2007, 10:16:51 am »
My great Aunt gave me a few boxes of stuff that belonged to my great uncle.  He passed away about 15 years ago so its all been sitting for a long time.  In it was a CB.  its set up on a stand with a cigarette lighter plug, and the antenna has a magnet plate.  so it can be moved from vehicle to vehicle.

I tried it out and it turns on, and the dials work.  the speaker works because i was able to get fuzz.  but i couldn't get any talking.  I took it on a trip down the PA turn pike and didn't even get any chatter there on any Chanel, so I'm not sure whats wrong.  I tried all the switches  i believe they say Mono, CB, and Out  i think i was only able to get fuzz on CB mode.  and only when i turned the squelch knob up.  the microphone makes it click when i press the button.  i don't know if its broadcasting my voice though.  nothing comes back through the speaker.

i opened it up to see if anything was obviously burned, and nothing was.

any help or suggestions?   maybe the antenna isn't working?   i really know nothing about these devices.

Thanks!

- Benny
