Technical Advice and Questions / Re: YJ U-Bolt Skids?
« on: February 27, 2008, 08:43:04 pm »
I went ahead and ordered a set of 4 Warrior Products ones from Quadratec. The rear ones will be easy, since nothing else attaches to them. The front ones will have removeable studs for the sway bar connects. Quadratec doesn't carry the replacement studs, so I'll have to see what they look like when they arrive. Maybe some graded hardware from the local hardware store will work for screw in replacements.

I'll be calling the left coast and getting a part number to share with Quadratec so they can stock the screw in replacements.

I'll probably take some before, during, and after photos of the install to share... ;)

So, the screw in pins on the YJ front skids just hold the swaybar connects? (rhetorical question...) Sounds pretty easy... now I need to find somebody local with a flame wrench to get the bent u-bolts off! ::)

Ok, I just found a link to Warrior Products site and the rear YJ U-bolt skids have an "*" which states they do not come with the screw in pins, so I am assuming that the factory shock mounts on the rear will remain the same. http://www.warriorproducts.com/catalog/pages/warrior-u-bolt-skid-plate-application-guide.html

Jenn: I'm surprised you didn't get the front ones on your YJ after you speared that stump a couple months ago! :o

Yeah, I looked at the Warrior Products ones at Quadratec's website. They seem pretty nice with the removeable pins.

The YJ front and rear mounts are different. What do you do with the rear shock mounts on the YJ? Keep using them? Cut them off and use the screw in pins on the new plates? Those rear shock mounts seem a bit sturdier than those pins... but the pins may give more clearance if the factory shock mounts are cut off.

Thanks for the input here folks! ;)

Technical Advice and Questions / YJ U-Bolt Skids?
« on: February 21, 2008, 09:02:29 pm »
I'm tired of smashing and bending the U-bolts on my '93 YJ! >:(

Has anyone here installed U-bolt skid plates on their YJ? If so, what brand did you buy and how difficult was the install?

I've seen photos of them, but have never seen them on a YJ before.

Thanks for your help! ;)

Bantam and Ford NEVER sold Jeeps as the question states! ;)

Bantam's prototype was the BRC and was never mass produced.  Ford's vehicle, the GPW (General Purpose Willys) was mass produced for the military, based on Willys blueprints, since Willys couldn't build them fast enough.

Willys Overland Corporation was the first to actually sell a "JEEP" after WW2, when it officially trademarked the name.

Bantam made trailers for use behind Willys and Ford 1/4 ton vehicles in WW2. Bantam was also pretty "pissed" that Willys Overland trademarked the "Jeep" name after the war, since the Bantam Recon. Car (BRC) was the 1st prototype to be tested by Uncle Sam. The Ford prototypes initially used engines from their 9N tractors, and failed the tests due to overheating and break-downs, amongst other things...

Okay, I'm done for now... ;D

Technical Advice and Questions / Re: CB Help

BennyLT: I just got a COBRA Hand Held "Road Trip" CB from www.KnowWhere2Jeep.com last Friday. I took it along on the Rausch Creek trip and was very happy with the performance! It comes with a magnetic exterior antenna and a small removeable one for when you take it out of the Jeep. It also has a power plug for your Jeep so you don't kill the batteries. I was able to communicate with the other Jeeps in the caravan up the Interstate, and was able to communicate with them on the trail. I got the Road Trip model for just a little over 100 bucks. Pretty good deal, and I can move it to any Jeep or car that I want. It locks in the glove box real nice too!
