17th Annual (2012) / Re: We need something NEW !
« on: September 04, 2011, 06:49:46 pm »
On the official Jeep(R) website, they have a "Heritage Line-up." I think it would be real cool for us to do that. Basically, select one of each and every model that is registered for the show and line them up from earliest model to latest model. You know... MB, GPW, CJ2A, M38, CJ3A, M38A1, CJ5, CJ6, CJ7, CJ8, YJ, TJ, JK and throw in the FSJ's where they belong or better yet, do a separate line-up with the progression of full sized Jeeps.

I think this would be an awesome promotional opportunity. You could sell a "sponsorship" of the Line-up/s to a vendor or dealership... or Jeep Corporation! It would be an awesome opportunity for Jp or another Jeep magazine to take photos for their publication. Seriously, where else are you going to see the full diversity of Jeep models?

So, what do y'all think?  ???

Mr. Chairman?  ;D

General Discussion / Re: Jeep Door Law!
« on: August 23, 2011, 11:50:52 am »
so if doors were an option on a CJ by the law you do not have to have them on, because they are not original equipment you are not altering anything by taking them off.  That is what I am understanding. where could I get written proof that doors were an option on CJ's that way if I get pulled over I could shove it in the cops face, don't get me wrong I am not a break every law kind of guy but there are a few of these B.S. laws that Pa has. Most of the cops around here don't care but we have a certain few that think they are super cops and have to push dumb laws like this instead of fighting real crime.

Joe:
Based on my research with vintage Jeeps, the only ones where doors and tops were an "option" were the early flat fender CJ's. Specifically" CJ2A, CJ3A, and CJ3B and some of the early CJ5's. Later CJ5's, CJ7's, and CJ8 Scramblers (AMC era) all were sold with doors and tops. I think you will be hard pressed to get around the law with any of the later CJ's.

Just my 2 cents!  ;)

Finished restoring a pair of vintage army reflectors and had Line-X sprayed into the bed yesterday. The plan is for it to last a long time so my son doesn't have to restore it again when he inherits it!  ;)

Next, to restore the original wooden side racks!

yep hes proud as heck, he didnt win anything but like he said " it aint pretty but its mine". he was more happy about just being there than anything else, we had a couple "perfectionists" come by nit picking but i set them straight as nicely as i could.

F@#K the "perfectionists!" I get tired of folks bashing other people's projects, just because it isn't "original" or "perfect." WHATEVER. I hear it plenty too... "you know that yellow wasn't an original color..." well duh, Dodge Viper Yellow wasn't available in 1951, I think I know that. "There's your sign!"

It's awesome to see youth getting involved in working on vintage vehicles. It's even more awesome when a parent and child do it together. It's Tad's Jeep and he should build it the way he wants it!  ;) Kudos to you both!

My original VIN tag was a Maryland MVA replacement tag from 'who knows when!'

I ordered an accurate zinc reproduction from a fellow in the Netherlands. He makes original reproductions of all early Jeep data plates and does a lot of work for the MVPA (military Jeep) crowd. Here is a photo of the Bantam Tag in its' correct original location.

Next step is to have LineX sprayed into the bed, so that nobody has to go through the restoration process again!  ;)

I didn't have a chance to take very many photos at the PA Jeeps show, so if you happened to get a decent one of Old Yeller with the Bantam trailer, please feel free to post it here. Thanks!  ;D

Here's a shot after we pulled her out of the shop with a fresh paint job!

It bounced around quite a bit behind the F-150, but made it home in one piece! The Bantam's safety chains were so short, I had to add extensions to make it legal.

After disconnecting from the tow rig, I had to immediately hook up to the CJ3A and see how she pulled. Well, it pulls like it was made for a Jeep! (duh!) Seriously, It rides very smooth and doesn't bounce or sway. Additionally, the original safety chains drop neatly into the original CJ3A draw bar.

Finishing up the paint job. The frame and underside were painted in heavy black frame paint and the tub was painted in "Dodge Viper Yellow," just like the CJ3A.  ;D

16" CJ2A style rims were used on the Bantam trailers along with 6.00x16 tires. I upsized to 7.00x16's so that I would be able to use the spare on my CJ3A for the Bantam trailer. The passenger side lug nuts are left handed thread, just like the military flatties and CJ2A and CJ3A's.

Here's a shot of the Bantam T3-C when it first came into the shop to get blasted primed and painted. There were a number of coats of paint, including OD Camo. The original color underneath was a dark green. Bantams for the civilian market were sold in red and green in 1946 & 47.

Primer time after blasting:

All of the little parts getting done:

After WW2, the lunette and pintle hitch set-up were removed for civilian production and replaced with a Fulton Hitch pictured below. It was designed for a 1 7/8" ball.

The brakes and shock absorbers were also removed after WW2 and a tailgate was cut into the original amphibious military design.

I was posting some of my Bantam project photos in the "What did you do to your Jeep today" section. Had a lot of comments, questions, and compliments at the PA Jeeps Show, so I am doing a full thread in this section for reference. Shoot me a PM or post here if you have any questions!

It's great to see a number of folks restoring the old military and civilian Jeep trailers!  ;D

I would like to echo Norm's sentiments.

Additionally, Sheila and I would like to thank the folks that worked along with us in the vehicle registration tents. I've done the "day-of" (not preregistered) Jeep registration for the past few years. This year ran extra smooth! Thanks to Peter and his Ladies... we had some real teamwork and moved well over 100 vehicles through very efficiently!
 ;)
